A committee headed by county Anne Karin Hamre delivered Monday its report to Agriculture Minister Sylvi Listhaug.

 Will keep fur industry

A majority of the committee who have undergone fur industry advocates sustainable development of the industry. A minority of controlled liquidation.

Five members of the committee advocates sustainable development of the industry and believes the welfare of fur will be safeguarded if the rules are followed.

A minority of three people advocates controlled liquidation. These mean it is uncertain whether animal welfare can be safeguarded when fox and mink are kept in wire cages in small spaces.

One member of the committee did not want to give any recommendation.

The committee was tasked to consider sustainable development and controlled liquidation as two main options for fur industry’s future.

 Profitable and competitive

 - The Commission believes that it is first and foremost industry itself is responsible for safeguarding competitiveness, stated Director Anne Karin Hamre when the committee submitted its report Monday.

Fur industry in Norway is today both profitable and competitive internationally. But it is also very controversial. Several other countries have completely or partially liquidated fur farming or running with this, the committee points out.

The Committee further believes that imposing a ban on fur farming in Norway should be combined with a compensation for producers.

If the industry is to be preserved, it should according to sample more research on alternatives where there used wire cages. (© NTB)
